Check It Out – Time Crimes

Los cronocrímenes (Timecrimes)
Ibarretxe & Co. S.L., KV Entertainment, Zip Films
Written and Directed by: Nacho Vigalondo
Starring: Karra Elejalde

This is by far one of the best time travel stories I’ve experienced.  Far beyond anything I’ve seen or read before, this one takes the concept of “going back but the same things happening” and shoves it into a sort of Groundhog’s Day delivery.

The science behind the time travel is unimportant, almost completely ignored, and that is good because trying to explain the how would diminish the power of the story.  The focus is clearly on one man’s repeated attempts to do what he thinks is right but everything just keeps seeming to be made worse.  Except that it was all invevitable.

I don’t want to spoil one iota of the film – and I feel like the trailer gave me a bit more than I wanted to know as I watched it.  That said, had I not known some of those bits I may never have given this film a chance.  It may be in Spanish, but if you don’t like subtitles it is dubbed on the DVD.  If you like speculative fiction, time travel, or just great human drama storytelling, you should definitely check it out!
