They are proven storytellers, but since they don't like to kiss corporate ass, guys like Michael Bay and Brett Ratner get the "high profile" jobs. Oh well. John Sayles, one of the best independent filmmakers today, got his start with Roger Corman, same as Joe Dante. It's funny that one is considered "serious" and the other a "genre" director. I still say "Matinee" by Joe Dante is one of the best films of the 90's. I've only seen one of those films, and heard of two others. Thanks, Jacobo - I now have 5 films to go find! The Thing, btw, the one I have seen? Excellent choice. John Carpenter at his worst is better than half the crap that gets called "blockbuster." I feel so ignorant.
