Interview with JAY FAERBER writer of Dynamo 5/Noble Causes

DILBERT: Can you tell us a little about Noble Causes and Dynamo 5?

FAERBER: Noble Causes is an Image title I wrote from 2001 until 2009, about a family of celebrity super-heroes and all the drama and intrigue that goes on behind the scenes, in between the world-saving events. We published our last issue earlier this year.

Dynamo 5 is another Image title, about the illegitimate children of a dead super-hero. Each of the kids has inherited one of Captain Dynamo’s powers, and they team up to protect his city. Issue #25 of the series comes out this week.

DILBERT: What direction do you see both going in?

FAERBER: Well, Noble Causes has reached its conclusion, so there’s nowhere to go with that one. With Dynamo 5, we’re taking a break after issue #25 because we’re changing artists, so we’ll be resuming our publishing schedule in late Spring / early Summer with new adventures for Dynamo 5.

DILBERT: Is there a good jumping on point for any new readers?

The complete run of Noble Causes is available in two b&w Archive editions. The book is also available in full-color trade paperbacks.

We’ve published three Dynamo 5 TPBs, with a fourth on the way in January. The best jumping on point for D5 is to start with the first trade, which collects seven issues for $9.99.

DILBERT: Is there any possibility of collecting either in hardcore?

FAERBER: We don’t have any plans to do hardcovers of either book right now. Hardcovers are very expensive to print, and I don’t think we’d sell enough to make it worthwhile, unfortunately.

DILBERT: Do you have any projects you are currently working on?

FAERBER: Dynamo 5 is my main comic book concern right now. Even though we’re on hiatus, I’m still writing scripts. And when I’m not working on that, I’ve got a few other unannounced comics I’m writing, as well as some movie and TV projects I’m trying to get off the ground.

DILBERT: What is a genre you would like to writer about in the future?

FAERBER:I like crime/mystery stuff a lot, and would like to do more in that genre. I wish the comic book market was more accepting of that kind of stuff. But while there are a handful of crime comics out there, the
comic market is still geared very heavily towards super-hero stuff.

DILBERT: If you could write on any other image title past or present what would it be?

FAERBER: I don’t have any ambition to write any other Image titles, since they’re all creator-owned. That’s the beauty of Image — you create your own properties. So I’m happy working on my own stuff, not someone
else’s.

DILBERT: Out of all your characters you have created who is your favorite and why?

FAERBER: This answer’s such a cliche, but it’s like trying to choose between your children. I don’t have a favorite. I’ve created dozens of characters over the years, so it’s impossible to single out a favorite. I tend to enjoy writing some more than others, but there’s no clear-cut winner.

DILBERT: And would you like to promote anything?

FAERBER: As I said before, the first Dynamo 5 TPB is seven issues for only ten bucks. A true bargain! So check it out, and if you like it, you can grab the other three trades and be all caught up for when we return
from hiatus in 2010.
