Drunk Duck 2

Posted by Shane Woodis | January 25, 2010 .

The one page reviews are back! This time we’re looking at DrunkDuck again, only instead of looking at a completely random list, we’re going to be taking a peek at the recently updated list.

I mentioned in my Smackjeeves article that I felt the recently updated list was a fairer assertion of the standard of quality for a website, since those are generally the comics that are still “alive”. As far as I’m aware, none of the comics from my initial review of DrunkDuck have updated since, and many of them were several months old anyway. But enough explanation: let’s get to the reviews!

Return of the Coopers

Good god, is that what we’re starting with? Apparently this person has never heard of pens, rulers, or spell checking. Also resizing; this is shrunk down from what was posted on the site. I’m not sure what to say, really. As far as I can tell this is made by a child, so I don’t really feel like a thorough review is necessary. Just, kid, if you see this: use a damn ruler. They’re not expensive

8th Chaos

I’m assuming this was a contestant for the “most ridiculous Sonic recolor” award. Seriously, what the fuck is that supposed to be? The spines and tail are about as big as the rest of the body. At least it looks like the background has some thought put into it. It’s just so damn boring to look at. No change in camera, no action going on. Why is this split up into 4 panels? You could do the whole thing in one.

Chibi Demon

This one’s not bad. I think it would look better with a different font and with word balloons or something, but still, it’s nice. There’s a nice balance between the simplicity of the art and the skill of the author.

TG’s Strange Adventures

And now more crap. What’s that thing in the center, anyway? Some kind of magical object, or just a ball of play-doh? I like how you can tell the “Unda” are intelligent because they wear glasses. Is that tree supposed to look like it’s waving, or do its branches just grow that way? Whatever the case, I always hate when a comic has to come to a halt and put up some kind of goofy diagram in order to explain something about the comic.

Filled With Random

Pretty acceptable… the art is simple, but not ugly. The joke is pretty weak, though, but I guess it makes sense if you’re Dutch. I’m just tired of seeing the word “random” thrown around so much. This isn’t random: this is a commentary on a specific country. I was thinking about posting an example of something that’s actually random, but I realized that deliberately trying to be random automatically makes something not random. It’s a calculated attempt to produce something that will be perceived as random. Actual randomness isn’t all that interesting anyway.

Dirge of Fenrir

You guys are lucky I’m resizing these things, because whoever’s making this comic didn’t think this needed to be resized. Seriously, the original file is about 1800 pixels wide. The line art is actually pretty good on this, but that coloring is just awful. Is that what they think fur looks like? It kind of looks like that brown one has fuzzy caterpillars crawling all over him. Where is this supposed to be taking place, anyway? There’s that weird motion blur in the background that makes me think they’re being shot through the air. While I’m glad the author put in some proper word balloons, I think she’d do well to learn how to make her own, instead of just using that one premade on in the Photoshop shapes tool.

How I Killed the Gods

I like the atmosphere, but the scratchy linework throws me off. Parts of it are good, but for the most part it looks less like a stylistic choice and more like the art is just unfinished. What is that thing, anyway? I can’t make any sense of the face. I guess it’s some kind of alien? No idea. I think I’m seeing it better now… it’s like a magic eye. An image is slowly forming from the scribbles.

Divine Grace

As far as sprite comics go, this is actually pretty good. There’s lighting and a decent amount of expressions, though the little emoticons help. What game is this from, anyway? My big complaint is that the father and oddly busty daughter are never in the same panel until the last two. You get no sense of where they are in relation to one another; is she in another room? Why doesn’t she get closer to him?

Plum

Well, this is actually from the same artist who did Chibi Demon, and I have essentially the same opinion on this one. She really should learn to spell check, though.

Kin Tori

Hey guys, isn’t Japan great? Wouldn’t it be just swell if we blindly emulated their art style and speech patterns? Really, though, the art’s not bad. It’s expressive and kind of fun, though I can’t say I’m a fan of non-backgrounds and walls of text. At least the author’s handwriting is pretty easy to read.

And there we have it. I can’t think of anything clever to say to sum this all up, so I’ll just stop writing here.
