With just a thought.
That’s all it takes, a single split second for an idea, or question to pop into your head. We all do it, all day long, each and everyday of our lives. As, I sit here writing this installment of my monthly column, I am doing it, and I’m sure at this exact moment as you’re reading this, you’re doing it to. Thinking.
Websters Dictionary defines the word THOUGHT as follows:
Thought: noun; 1. the act or product of thinking; mental activity; an idea, opinion, etc., 2. attention; regard or care.
Just imagine the possibilities that are contained within a single thought. Ideas spring to life and opinions are formed, just from the simple act of thinking. This is something that we ALL can do. It’s not the ability of only a mutant, metahuman or superhero. But the question is, is the act of thinking a special power? The answer is YES, it is.
You’re all probably sitting here reading this and scratching your heads. Wondering where this is all going. That’s a good thing, because it means you’re thinking. Stick with me now.
Imagine what it was like as Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster sat thinking, and with but a single thought created the iconic character we all know and love Superman.
Imagine what it was like as Bob Kane with a single flash of brilliance said I’ll call him Batman.
Imagine what it was like as William Moulton Marston created the most recognizable female character in comic books with Wonder Woman.
Imagine what it was like when Stan Lee and Steve Ditko unleashed everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-man upon an unsuspecting populace. Or what it was like as once again Stan Lee, this time together with Jack Kirby uncannily created the X-Men and the first family of Marvel, the Fantastic Four.
Or as the legendary Will Eisner put pencil to paper and created The Spirit.
The point is the list goes on and on and on. I’m sure you can all see that. Just look at the rack at your local comic book specialty shop, or the spinner rack at you local drugstore or supermarket. But the one thing that connects all of these great creators and characters, the thing that ties them all together is they all started with just a thought, and look at what they have become.
These creators were all ordinary human beings much like you and me, and look at the truly amazing and larger than life things they created. Super Heroes, Aliens, Mutants, Detectives, Fantastic Worlds, Evil Villains and so much more. All with but a single thought, and from there so many wonderful things have sprung. Things that have entertained, surprised, shocked and appalled us for countless years. These things, these creations which are so ingrained within our conscience that they have become a part of our lives and our culture. True to life ICONS if you will. Look at all the truly amazing possibilities there are when you just stop and think. Even for just a second.
We all possess this extraordinary power. This power of thought. The question is what will you do with yours?
