This week I talk with a man who blows you away with his art, makes you laugh with his videos on Facebook, and has an obsession with historical tragedies?? That man of course is super talented Ethan Van Sciver.
Mark – On Cyberfrog you wrote and illustrated, did you enjoy wearing both hats? Is writing something we may see you doing more of in the future?
EVS - Both hats? I should have worn a mask. But look, Cyberfrog was done in a free-wheelin’, stream of consciousness kind of way. And I didn’t really work at becoming a better writer very much, I mostly just drew bug-monsters and excessively violent images that I thought were funny. You may seem me do some writing in the future. I’m learning now.
Mark – Speaking of Cyberfrog, what can we expect when it is released from Wildstorm?
EVS - Whenever it’s ready! I’m not rushing it, but I am working on it.
Mark - You have worked with Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, and soon Gail Simone. Is there anyone who you really would love to work with that you haven’t yet?
EVS – Rod Serling. But I’d need a Ouija board. Or a shovel.
Mark - I loved what you did with New X-men #118, what did Marvel have to say once they discovered your hidden messages? (Ethan hid the word sex into his art on pages of that issue)
EVS - They said, “Please don’t do that anymore.” I said, “No.”
Mark -Speaking of X-Men, what can you tell us of the X-Men miniseries with Geoff Johns that never was?
EVS – Well, it WAS, but I never drew it. Someone else did. It was MORLOCKS, and Geoff really liked them. I didn’t, really, but you know, if Geoff’s got energy in some direction, you should listen to what he has to say.
Mark - Your art on Flash Rebirth is amazing, but how do you personally feel about the return of Barry Allen?
EVS – I was a big supporter of the return of Barry Allen. I like my Superfriends, and rarely do I prefer their successors.
Mark - You like to show your autograph collecting success on Facebook, what is the Holy Grail of autographs that you have yet to collect?
EVS – Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe. I’d love an Ed Wood Jr, but I bet those are very scarce.
Mark - You have said that you have an obsession with historical tragedies, care to explain?
EVS – I’m interested in the panic and suffering that followed tragic events before my birth. Death fascinates me and always has. I’m very morbid.
Mark - Finish the sentence – Ethan Van Sciver is
EVS - …getting better.
