Written and drawn by Martin Smith
Our hero is Dan Chance, an actor and newly-minted emigrant to Mars, and he’s on a research assignment for his next prospective role. Dan will be tagging along with a Martian police officer on the daily beat, learning the ropes and hopefully gaining some experience he can use to snag that new blockbuster role he wants.
Also, the police officer our hero is tagging along with (who thinks Dan smells “like a Turkish person”) is a dinosaur. A Tyrannosaurus Rex, to be precise. Why don’t you take a guess as to what the dino’s name might be.
Go on, think about it for a minute. I’ll wait.
…
That’s right. His name is Rex! And he also probably has the brain of a Chinese military officer. Together, Dan and Rex investigate the botched hostage taking of a wealthy ex-general’s daughter, as Dan slowly but surely continues to remain oblivious that he is a pawn in an interplanetary conspiracy to assassinate the president of Earth.
This comic sounds ridiculous, and, really, it is. But it’s ridiculous in one of the best, most entertaining ways imaginable.
The art is not the best, technically speaking. Some might call it bad, but those people would be wrong. It is, admittedly, a bit amateurish, but I’m not sure that’s really a problem here. It tells a story in a reasonably effective way while matching the tone of the writing and managing to keep a consistent feel throughout the book, and isn’t that all that can be reasonable asked of comic book art?
Despite the fact that the writing of Attackosaur rises to a higher level of quality than the art does, there is still a strange sort of charm about the not-entirely-refined drawing skills of Mr. Smith. Honestly, I don’t think I could imagine a story like this being told in any other kind of art style. This comic is solid, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light-hearted action/comedy tale with dinosaurs on jetpacks.
And c’mon, who isn’t looking for a comic like that?
